No playback control VLC 2.0

Postby Robangel12 » 15 Mar 2012 05:44

I am running OS 10.7.3, and upgraded to VLC 2.0 and now I have no control of video playback, can't pause, rewind, stop, or fast forward. I've reset the preferences, tried 32-bit and 64-bit, and the issue still remains. Never had this issue prior to VLC 2.0. Any one got any ideas?

What exactly do you mean? Do the Stop, Play, Pause, etc buttons not work when pressed? Or do they not appear on the interface? Do the keyboard buttons work?

Can we get a screenshot please? Did you already update to VLC 2.0.1?

I'm having the same problem. I'm on a 2011 Macbook Pro running OS 10.7.3 and recently updated VLC to 2.0.1. The interface changed, which I'm assuming was part of the major update, however none of the controls are responding. I don't know what I would take a screenshot of, there's no error or anything. I just keep clicking on buttons and they aren't responding. I went into preferences and made sure I didn't have something deactivated, but everything seemed fine. I also wanted to switch my audio device from my Macbook to my TV, and the command is shift+a, like I've been doing for years, but it wont recognize it. I have to manually go to Audio -> Audio Device -> HDMI. I don't know what to do about play/pause etc.

I'm no authority, but here's a couple of tests that came to mind to try to see where things may be failing. When you click do you see the buttons depress? They should have a down state. When you hover over a button does a tooltip appear within a few seconds? What type of mouse are you using? 3rd party driver? Trackpad? Any possibly unique settings for your mouse?

Sounds like clicks in the preferences are working, right? Try deselecting "Show video within the main window" to see if either controls in the resulting 2 windows begin working at that point. Does the Dark or Bright style make a difference? Requires a VLC restart to apply.

If you press Command-E or Shift-Command-E, do clicks work in those floating panels?

Does clicking on playlist items work? How about right-clicking on a playlist item for the contextual menu?

So just a couple of things that may help the developers narrow down where things are going wrong.

Yes, the button depresses. I know for a fact that I am clicking on the button and the event is being fired, however there is no response via functionality (the pause button is pressed, but the video doesn't pause). Even when I go into the menu bar and select a playback command like pause or stop, it won't respond. It shows that I am clicking on the button or menu item, but doesn't respond with an action or anything visible to me (like the video pausing). Other functions like switching displays (which I do using shift+a) only works via toolbar menu.

I checked the error logs and they aren't recording anything so I'm assuming there aren't any uncaught exceptions or debugging errors thrown, it seems like these even handlers are silently failing.

I wonder if this is a similar issue:

Also we could try some basic Mac maintenance to see if any of it helps.

Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive and click Repair Permissions.

Download and Install Onyx. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx

Go to Cleaning and Delete all the System, User & Fonts Caches.

Go to Maintenance -> Rebuild and Select just LaunchServices and Execute. (Note this resets which applications open which documents and cleans up the application list in Open with menus)

Yes.

yes tooltips show up.
normal imac's mouse.
Sounds like clicks in the preferences are working, right? Try deselecting "Show video within the main window" to see if either controls in the resulting 2 windows begin working at that point. Does the Dark or Bright style make a difference? Requires a VLC restart to apply.
yes, have tried them. nothing works.
If you press Command-E or Shift-Command-E, do clicks work in those floating panels?
yes.
Does clicking on playlist items work? How about right-clicking on a playlist item for the contextual menu?
yes.

ps. None of the keyboard shortcuts work (pause/play, skip10sec, etc).

Weird stuff going on for some. Like I said, try the maintenance things above along with deleting the VLC preferences with the script that comes in the Goodies folder on the install dmg to see if it helps. At minimum it'll at least rule some more things out.

I also run 10.7.3 on my iMac and I have none of these issues. Maybe if there were a few more mentions of hardware that people are using, a trend may be found there.

Ultimately I can't fix your issue since I'm not a VLC developer, but I can help narrow down things through troubleshooting.

Yeah, thank you for your tips and help, they are the only help we've got on this issue!
I've done all those things: clear the preferences, run the disk maintenance stuff, the onyx etc.

edit.
I hope that this crash report sheds some light to the issue:

So, I guess that's confirmation that none of that made a difference then.

It's just really odd that most seem to not have the issue, but some do on 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7 from what I've seen. I'm wondering if there's some other common software installed such as a system-wide hotkeys tool or other system-wide interface affecting app.

One other thing you can try is temporarily create a new user on your computer. Log into it and run VLC to see if a clean user-account has the same issue. Granted some systems like I mentioned before can be installed for all users so there still could be an effect, but sometimes doing this shows if there's something installed for the user that's affecting things adversely.

Also, if you hold down the shift key during computer startup it'll login and disable any login items that usually launch so that's something else to look at.

Most people and devs probably haven't responded because they haven't been able to duplicate the issue.

I had the same issues of controls not working and crashes on quit until I unchecked the "Mac OS X interface" checkbox under Preferences - Show all - Interface - Main Interface
Now quits normaly, controls and mousewheel working :) happy camper!

Using G5 Dual 1.8 w/Radeon 9600 XT 128mb
Mac OS X 10.5.8
VLC 2.0.1
Many thanks for still supporting PPCs

Good find. I can confirm when checked that I now get all the issues reported. Although I'm not sure how the reporters had it checked. It's never been checked on my end.

Just FYI: This issue will be automatically fixed when launching VLC 2.0.2 for the first time, which will be available shortly.
