Magnificent performance

I used to have VLC on my old macbook and it played almost anything I asked it to.

I now have a new machine, an imac running 10.6.2. Once I set it up, one of the first things I did was to download VLC. It now appears however that VLC now plays precisely nothing. AVIs? Nope. MP4V? Nope? H264? Sorry. Matruska? No way.

Oh, and I looked it up online and it said to check the preferences. I went to this option and VLC crashed (which it always did on the macbook, but it didn't affect the playback). So basically what I have now is a program called VLC, which used to mean something like Video Lan Converter, but now means Very Likely to Crash.

Before I delete it entirely, might I be doing something wrong?

Not providing a crash log...?

Not keeping the "brand new" imac up to date (10.6.8 maybe? huge system changes).

Try deleting the preferences files (in your home folder -> Library -> Preferences ...somewhere here, look for all vlc references).

I have three machines all running smoothly, so there is something wrong somewhere with your install.

Very likely.
