Playback of AVCHD 60i file with yadif (2x) is not consistent

Hi,

I am trying to play video from a Canon Vixia HFM40 camcorder on VLC on a Mac, but the video playback is not very smooth. I am using the "Yadif (2x)" interlace mode. The first time I play back the file it is very choppy. The second time it is very smooth (same great quality that I get when I hook up the camcorder directly to an HDTV). The third time the playback does not work anymore.

This is happening on the VLC nightly build for Mac OS X (64 bit) from 2/17/12 (vlc-2.0.0-x86_64-20120217-0315.zip). Yadif (2x) does not work on the latest public release (1.1.12), so the playback is consistently not smooth on that version.

Any ideas?

Here are the specs:

Video Format (Canon's XFP mode):
- AVCHD MPEG-4 AVC/H.264
- Resolution: 1,920 x 1080
- Bitrate: 17 Mbps
- Frame rate: 60i or 30p (problem occurs in both instances)
- File extension: MTS

Workstation:
- Fall 2010 27" iMac, quad core 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
- Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3
- 12 GB RAM

Thanks.

Ralph

Although it probably won't make a difference with your issue, but the latest public release is 2.0 which is a more recent build than the latest 2.0.0 nightly you're using.

Regarding yadif (2x) I've also found that it's not smooth no matter which video codec is played.

Does it mean it works better on nightly builds before 2/17/12?
Yadif (2x) does not work on the latest public release (1.1.12), so the playback is consistently not smooth on that version.
Does Yadif (2x) not work on the 1.1.12 at all? (I haven't used 1.1.x for a long time, so I don't know about it...)

Thank you both for your responses. I ran another test with the public 2.0 release and the video does not play back smoothly on that release, either.

-> nkorlyama: I did not try it on nightly builds before 2/17/12, so I'm not sure if it worked on those. I just tried it again with the latest highly build (2/26/12) and the playback of the Canon videos has other issues on that build (it flickers extensively, regardless of the interlace settings). Also, Yadif (2x) did not work on any of the 1.1.x releases I tested.

Any other ideas on how to smoothly play back the AVCHD 1920x1080 60i video on VLC?

Thanks.

Ralph

I saw your sample file on the ticket 6256.
On Mac OS X, VLC couldn't play it properly and hanged up while playback, regardless of deinterlacing settings.
On Windows, VLC played it almost well.

IMHO, this issue is not caused by yadif. But VLC for Mac OS X has some problem with your sample file.

Thanks, I agree that the issue looks independent of yadif, that's why I submitted the ticket. Canon provides a player for Windows, but not for Mac OS X. Hopefully a future version of VLC will be able to play these types of files.

Thanks again for your replies.
