Help Please: DVD Not Playing Mulit Region since Lion Install
Posted: 28 Nov 2011 15:37

Hi all,
Great forum and I gleamed a lot of troubleshooting tips from previous posts. But I'm at a loss.
I bought my Mac in New Zealand and when I moved back to North America, I installed VLC so I didn't waste my DVD region changes AND that I wouldn't have to buy many of my DVDs.
So it had been set on Region 4, but I was able to play Region 1 DVDs on my machine.
Then I installed Lion and now VLC only plays the region it's set to.
I've upgraded to the latest version, reset the preferences and deleted the org files.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks!
Iris

DId you do a Firmware update too?

Hi there...
I've only ever done updates based on what was pushed to me via Apple or VLC. So I've never downloaded an firmware update to break anything...
Does that make sense?
Cheers
Iris

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple added an OS protection layer for this in Lion. DVD playback performance is definitely worse than on Snow Leopard. I didn't read any further feedback like yours so far, so I can't tell for sure.
uhm, unhelpful comment for you. sorry.

HI again,
I waited to see if anyone had similar issues. Not sure why it's just me! I unintsalled and reinstalled to see if that helped, but no luck.
There's a little error sign when I try to play a DVD. But I can't tell what the error is (it's like a yellow triangle with a '!'). Anyway to tell what it actually says?
Cheers
Iris

Yes, there is a detailed log in the "Messages" panel, which you can find the "Window" menu.

Hi, I've got OS X 10.6.8, and VLN won't play DVDs that aren't region 2. I think that this is a new problem - maybe of the last month? I've reinstalled VLN, but that didn't help. I get same yellow error triangle when I put in region 1 discs. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. Yellow triangle etc. I have Mac Lion 10.7.2, and am presently in France. (Zone 2) I cannot play any Zone 2 DVD's. Basically it freezes at the first frame, then crashes, or does nothing. I have some other zone DVD's and they seem to work... but they maybe pirated copies... I will know more when I return to Aust and check out DVD's from home.
Firmware? No idea how that works...but here is the report from the attempt to play Bienvenue chez les ch'tis! This came from the messages. This best result has been when I drag the disc into the playlist and then press "play" symbol. i.e. not go to playback, or open disc... I did get a title of sorts across the bottom of screen... but basically black and white nothing then crash.
Hope the following helps... if not what can I send you? (The time appears wrong cos I still have computer set to Aust time.) Here in France it is now about 1 am, there about 11 am tomorrow!

VLC 1.2.0 - pre3 arrives as an .exe file i.e. windows ... I have Mac Lion 10.7.2,
but merci... any Mac version you think will suffice?

Downloaded .DMG - thanks, but still was not able to proceed. Then tried another movie (old and "universal") "Casablanca" presented for Zone 2
(Incidentally, I have never chosen a zone for this new MacBook Pro, as I previously always used VLC with power Mac, and wasn't going to do otherwise now with Lion.)
Also I do have the entire "message" saved (for both movies) with 1.2.0 pre3.dmg if required by the (excellent) programmers

I have had this issue with my MacBook 13" OS X 10.6.8 and VLC 2.1.2 (64bit), and I just found the solution.
You need a 64 bit version of libdvdcss aka libdvdcss.2.dylib
Download the libdvdcss.pkg and install it. Or manually install (that BTW I was unable to figure out how with the limited instructions
). The .pkg file though did the installation just fine and at reboot of VLC, there was my DVD, playing just fine!
The link I found my info was:
http://gskluzacek.tumblr.com/post/44981 ... n-mac-os-x
But there may be another source out there... this one just worked for me, and I looked no further.
