Stuttering when trying to play large MKV files

I'll start off with my computer specs:

MacBook 4,1 (Snow Leopard)
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
4GB 667 DDR2 Ram
Only 107 GB out of 250GB utilized
Intel GMA X3100 144MB VRAM GPU

I used to be able to run 15 GB MKV's with no problem (a few months ago), but now after a good 20 minutes if watching, the video becomes stuttered and is all but impossible to watch. To say nothing of 32GB MKV's. I get the same stuttering problem if I try to play the movie from an external HD hooked up with USB 2.0 or if I try to run the movie directly from my computers HD.

I looked online and have already made the following changes to VLC: Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding is set to 'All' and under file, the Caching value (ms) is set to '9500'.

Any idea how I can get my videos to play smoothly? Thanks!

Not to bump my own thread, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. I mean my computer is obviously more powerful than an off-the-shelf Blu-Ray player, so why can't it play MKV's properly?

Try VLC 1.2, if you can.
