On-the-fly Quadraphonic ?

I have been able to set my MacBook Pro to output Quadraphonic sound via my M-Audio Profire 2626, which in turn feeds 2 amplifiers for front and rear speakers.
the configuration is working flawlessly for DVDs (ie The Eagles -- Hell Freezes Over Live) - and I will never watch another DVD in stereo as long as i live
but i was wondering if it were somehow possible to set VLC up to do quadraphonic decoding on the fly -- ie taking a stereo music file and using the phase matrix information to generate quadraphonic sends as the music was playing? i have seen hardware phase matrix decoders on ebay but am looking for a software one instead, if possible. if this were possible, it would work a treat with Pink Floyd, Beatles et al
any ideas?
