I'm trying to use VLC to open files from shell scripts via the CLI, and have it working for the most part, but I can't get different shell scripts to use the same instance. I have tried searching and only found something about the ability to open multiple instances through CLI, suggesting that VLC doesn't otherwise allow multiple instances. So in a nutshell I'm trying to do the opposite of that I'm using 10.7 btw.

There's a GUI preference, Tools>Preferences>Interface, Allow only one instance and CLI options --one-instance, --one-instance-when-started-from-file. See http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_command-line_help
