turning off Subtitles by default

I'm running VLC version 1.1.7 on my Mac Mini (OS 10.6.6).
I've ripped some DVD's using MakeMKV and when I play them with VLC, the subtitles are on by default. I know that I can turn them off manually each time by disabling them in the Video>Subtitles menu. However, I have to do this with each and every file and would like to have them turned off by DEFAULT.
I've tried going into the preferences (all, not basic), but can't seem to get the settings correct so that they're off. "Subtitle Autodetection fuzziness" set to 0 is not disabling them. I even set this number to "99" as I saw recommended in older posts, but this still didn't work. I'm still having to turn them off each time.
"Autodetect subtitles files" is UNchecked.
What am I doing wrong? Is there another setting that I'm missing somewhere so that they will NOT show.
