Mac runs slow after VLC use

I have an iMac 27" Quad Core i7 processor 4gb ram etc. etc., so HD video playback is definitely not a problem for me. When using VLC to play 1080p files that top 10gb, they run smoothly (95% of the time), but they will occasionally stutter near the end, still not a huge issue. It's after watching a 1080p file for around 30 min or more when problems occur. If I stop watching a full screen 1080p file after this time period, my iMac runs EXTREMELY slow. I can't do anything without it taking 3-4 times as long as it would to normally complete the task...like opening applications or anything basic. So, if I even have the patience to click on the Apple symbol and restart my computer, it works fine once again. However, I usually just manually shut it off. I have the latest version of VLC. I have no clue what's happening but it gets annoying having to restart your computer every time you watch an HD file using VLC.
