Hello,
I was trying to google my problems, but it seems to be no solution around, so:
Is here any way how to decode AAC multichannel (5.1) audio with VLC and play to to SPIF ? I have new unibody mini mac and this is really nightmare. Using Logitech Z-5500.
VLC with default setup downmix 5.1 to stereo :-(

Any suggestions ?

Thank you.

Does it work if you change it in the Audio menu?

Playing mp4's with AAC audio results in just stereo sound for me too. In VLC the audio type is set to SPDIF.

My work around is to use Handbrake to convert the AAC audio track to AC3 passthru.

Is it even legal to use AAC in SPDIF ?

From what I have read sending AAC over SPDIF is fine, but for it to work you will need an amp that knows how to decode it. For most people I suspect a filter that converts to Dolby Digital 5.1 is what would be required.
