Yes, I'm really missing the Growl function too. It's just annoying that there's no way at the moment to display something like the track name, album and artist without bringing the VLC window to front. Only because of this rather simple lacking feature I'm now using iTunes again (with
GrowlTunes) for playing my mp3s instead of VLC.
But it seems that feature was removed from the OS X Version of VLC because the lack of support for it. I haven't looked into it yet, but maybe something like this can also be done using Apple Script and
growlnotify. But I'm not experienced enough in programming on the Mac yet, do make something like that.
