Having the same problems out here. Any updates coming up adressing this issue? After VLN complains, the rest of the ipad apps stop playing sounds.

Hi. I had this problem too. Then I found that the orientation lock switch has become a volume mute switch. Annoying but unchangeable. Flicked it over and all is well now. Just now I'm sick of having to use the new awkward orientation lock, but videos work fine. Hope this helps

I just want to give a heads up to anyone getting here by Google looking for the answer to this problem on the iPad 2 (iOS 4.3):
The switch on the side of the iPad is now either an orientation lock or mute button. Even if you have it set as orientation lock, VLC will still think you have it muted. I corrected this issue by leaving the app, toggling it into being for mute, unmuting it, then turning it back into orientation lock mode and opening the app again. Seems to have worked, although it did not work initially after turning OFF the orientation lock.
Just to reiterate, because that paragraph can be confusing, this is what happened:
Opened up an AVI file in VLC, told me "No volume available." Switch was set to orientation lock, and the orientation was locked.
Tried to turn the orientation lock off (to trick the player into believing I 'unmuted it'). This did NOT work.
I toggled the switch under settings and made it into a mute switch. Opened the app, worked.
Toggled the switch BACK to being Orientation locked.
Worked.
Now I can lock and unlock the orientation changer freely with the switch and it does not affect the volume.
