Unable to change hotkeys in 1.1.0

Hi there,

on both my Macs I updated vlc to the newest version. Now I have the problem that I'm unable to change the hotkeys on both Macs like I did in the previous version.

I changed "short forward/backward jump" to the keys "Left" and "right".
In the newest version this seems to be impossible. In the basic preference view I can delete the hotkey but I can't reassign a new one.
In the more specific view it's also impossible to change the hotkeys - I can't open the list of the keys by klicking on it.

In the older version it looked like on this picture.

I deleted the preferences, installed vlc again - no change. Any hint to solve this problem?

thanx

hi,

I have EXACTLY the same issue.

I removed any trace of VLC from my mac, reinstalled it and it showed me the same.
However it works with previous versions of vlc.

it's the same issue with mac osx 10.6.3 and 10.6.4

I'm now also using the older version again.
Hotkeys work like a charm and I can't live without them.

However a solution for the problem would be appreciated.

$ cp ~/Library/Preferences/VLC/vlcrc ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc/vlcrc

$ cp ~/Library/Preferences/VLC/vlcrc ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc/vlcrc
thx for that, however this doesn't solve the issue. It only gives me the hotkeys from my previous installation and leaves me unable to change them without having to switch to a previous version of vlc.

Preferences->Hotkeys settings is still empty and unable to be altered.

In the basic preferences you should be able to select an action, click the Change button and then press the key you want.

Yes, the All preferences section doesn't work and didn't in the RC releases either. Haven't tried the final release yet because they don't have a PPC release yet and frankly I've been using MPlayer OSX Extended anyway because it's much more responsive and playback performance is much better with Multi-Processor support, at least with rev14-test2.

thx, but I tried that before and it's also not working in the basic preferences.

Yes MPlayer OSX Extended is a fine player, my choice for mkv files.

you can set the keys by editing ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc/vlcrc

really annoying, but you can just open that file with textedit (or any other editor), and find the functions that you'd like then set the keys from there.
if you're not sure what VLC calls a certain key, you can use the basic settings to edit say "short backwards jump" and change it to the key in question, then examine the vlcrc file to see what "short backwards jump" is set to in the preferences. from there edit whichever function that you would like!

I can edit part of the hotkeys in Basic Mode (short back and forward, medium back and forward, long forward, but neither of the very short jumps nor the long back), but Advanced Hotkeys setting is unaccessible (all settings are duplicated and cannot be edited).

I did try to edit the vlcrc directly, but it has no effect when playing video.

it's also not working on the latest nightly build 1.1-branch-intel64-20100625-0208

a reply from one of the devs would be much appreciated.

thx

if you go to ~\Library\Preferences\org.videolan.vlc\vlcrc and use TextEdit to edit the vlcrc file, you can change the hotkeys. I would recommend using cmd+F to search for "Long" and it will take you to long jump forward. The thing to note is that long jump forward (key-jump+long) and long jump backward (key-jump-long) have a # symbol next to them. This means that they are being interpreted as comments, not as code. If you delete the # symbol, you should be good to go.

Note: Option-Left is written as Alt-Left in this document. Option-right = Alt-Right, etc.

Also, if you change any other hotkeys using the VLC interface rather than this document method, you will end up overwriting the commands for long jump forward and long jump backward (and perhaps others, those are just the only ones I use).

It's a workaround, not a fix.

Same problem here - using 10.5.8

(Some) Hotkeys can be changed in Basic
But in All they are doubled up, blank and unalterable.

Especially annoying with the "Jump" keys as I use these all the time and not having them renders VLC virtually useless to me.

if you go to ~\Library\Preferences\org.videolan.vlc\vlcrc and use TextEdit to edit the vlcrc file, you can change the hotkeys. I would recommend using cmd+F to search for "Long" and it will take you to long jump forward. The thing to note is that long jump forward (key-jump+long) and long jump backward (key-jump-long) have a # symbol next to them. This means that they are being interpreted as comments, not as code. If you delete the # symbol, you should be good to go...It's a workaround, not a fix.
Huge thanks - that's worked for me. :D

Upping this for 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 daily 2010-09-05.
Very Short jumps still not visible in Basic settings, and advanced settings still duplicated and not modifiable.

I also noticed that in the vlcrc file there are these entries for short jumps:

# Very short backwards jump (key)
key-jump-extrashort=Command-Left

# Very short backwards jump (key)
global-key-jump-extrashort=Unset

Modifying the global key doesn't work, only the first setting makes a difference.

...I have SnowLeopard 10.6.4
Please, a direct link to where I can download a version that will alllow me to edit the hotkey...
On:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

you can read:

Older versions can be found by browsing our FTP archive:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/

So maybe you try this:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... .6.tar.bz2

EDIT: 2010-10-13 00:28

Sorry, i just see that this is only the sourcecode. I guess VideoLAN doesn't supply us with the dmg-Files of older (working) versions anymore, so just get 1.0.5 with working shortkeys from oldapps.com:

http://mac.oldapps.com/VLC_Player.php
