DVDs not playing with 1.0.1 but ok with 0.9.8a

I've upgraded vlc to 1.0.1 from 0.9.8a on my mac mini (intel) running OSX 10.5.8. Now my DVD won't play. The DVD plays fine using mac's DVD player software however.

I uninstalled vlc and re-installed the older, 0.9.8a version, and the DVD plays fine.

The message in the vlc console is:

dvdnav debug: DVDNAV_STILL_FRAME
dvdnav debug: - length=0xff
main warning: no vout found, dropping subpicture
main warning: can't get output subpicture

I've trying reinstalling vlc, clearing the preferences and even changing the output module to something else but all to no avail. I've played this DVD with my older vlc before.

Here are my machine specs if it helps:

Could you try seeing of deleting your VLC preferences resolves the issue?

I tried that before reinstalling 1.0.1 and that did not help :(

Yesterday, when demonstrating Macs to one of my clients I discovered that none that we had at the store plays DVDs with VLC 1.0.1 on Snow Leopard. AVI and MKV play nicely. DVDs play fine with DVD Player that Macs have. I'd rather use VLC as it does not mess with region problems. Here are snippets of one of the reports from our machines. Could someone from the developer team please write comment on when they expect the issue to be resolved? Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work.

Glad to see I am not the only one with this issue :)

I got the same problem on my Mac.

I used to use 0.9.8a, then I installed 1.0.0 and the DVDs not longer come up. Hopefully I did a backup (moving the app) of 0.9.8a to other location outside Applications so I can use both 1.0.0 and 0.9.8a.

Well so I installed 1.0.1 today thinking this new release solve the problem. Nope, no way, the bug still there in 1.0.1. I cannot launch DVD without any way, even opening VIDEO_TS directly.

Off course the DVD player of the own Mac OS X works perfectly but I would like to use VLC because is region free.

What is said is (I'm translating from my spanish release) No able to open the MLR 'dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1. See registry for more details.

This is what I got in registry window:

I have exactly the same problem. Since version 1.0 of VLC I cannot play any DVDs on my iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It didn't work with OS X 10.5.7 nor does it with OS X 10.6.1
I deleted the preferences as well as the ~/.dvdcss directory. It didn't helpt either. The only thing working is installing a pre-1.0 version of VLC (0.9.9a).

I don't think anyone from VLC is looking into this issue ...

I'm having the exact same issue described by the author.

Mac OS X 10.6.1 on a 2.8Ghz C2D iMac

Tried with 1.02 32 and 64 bit and 1.01 32 bit - same issue.

 I'll second that. I'm seeing the same symptom of VLC crashing when trying to play a DVD on a mini with a Core Duo (32 bit only) and OS X 10.6.1 (snow leopard). A post elsewhere suggested turning off subtitles, but that had no effect.

Richzilla.

Either the mac is not high on the developer's agenda or the developers aren't reading this forum.

Does anyone know how to file a formal bug report?

I just got a new MacBook and have discovered the same problem. Upgrading to 1.0.3 didn't help, and downgrading to 0.9.8 also didn't fix it. All that happens is I hit play on a disc and hear the sound of the menu failing to start. I was happy to hear I wasn't alone in this problem, sad to hear that there is still no fix. I use VLC for most of my viewing, and particularly so I can do screengrabs when blogging. Can't go forwards, can't go backwards...I'm stuck.
