Hey guys,

I'm currently preparing a really last release of the 0.9 branch for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. I felt this is needed and requested by the community still using this release of Mac OS X, so I'd like to fix the most annoying bugs allowing you to continue to use VLC for quite some time.

Here's an excerpt of the current release notes:

Report back what you're missing and I'll see what I can do. Note that this release is absolutely not about speed improvements (there is nothing we could do there without backporting most 1.0 fixes, which would be an enormous amount of work), but only about stability and usability.

If you plan on doing a last release of the 0.9 branch then we shouldn't forget about this bug

I have the Mac OS X package for 10.4 (release 0.9.9a) (Intel). It worked like a charm, opening any video other applications couldn't. Now I get an error message:
"You cannot use the application VLC with this version of Mac OS X". The only thing that changed on my system is that I installed Safari 4.0.2, but I'm not using the browser plug-in version of VLC. Any idea what happened? Thanks.

You probably updated to VLC 1.0 or modified the application bundle of your VLC installation. In any case, just download VLC again and replace "VLC.app" in your /Applications folder. If you want a few hours after reading this message, you can get VLC 0.9.10, which will fix quite a few issues on Mac OS X.

VLC 0.9.10 was just released 1 hour ago.

Not a bug but i would like you at videolan to include skins in the osx port of vlc..

Please note that skins support for Mac OS X got absolutely no priority for us, as it is quite difficult to do with little actual benefit to most users. We are too few people working on the Mac OS X port to focus on this kind of stuff. Patches are always welcome of course.

When updating VLC 0.9.9 via either its Autoupdate function or via a manual invocation from the menu bar, the .dmg file provided in the resulting download comprises the vlc-1.0.1 release, not the appropriate 0.9.10 release.

I tested this on both the Intel and the PPC OS X platforms running Tiger 10.4.11, and found it to be consistently repeatable.

I imagine it's possible the configuration of the mirror(s) I used could be part of the equation, so I will mention that my ISPs distribution backbone router (24.24.0.0/14) is in Albany, New York.

Regrettably, our current update checker was not made for 2 versions of VLC for 2 different releases of the same OS. Therefore, it doesn't know about VLC 0.9.10, but 1.0.1 only. Sorry for any inconvenience. We are working on a better one right now..

I have two issues that would be nice to address whether possible.

First, when it is last release, it could stop looking for updates or leverage what update is possible to apply. I can uncheck it of course but now when I see there will be another update I will not uncheck it. Update to 1.0.1 is still poping ap.

Second is that VLC can not handle wmv files that has .wm extension (without v at the and) VLC is not offered as App for them in Finder and you can not drop files on App icon. Droping them into playlist works you can play them in case VLC wont cras ahs it happened with one file now. I will post log in other post.
Changing extension to .wmv enable VLC as workable App. But file that palyed before OK crashed VLC now.

It is log from renamed wmv file /Changed extension/ File played fine before changing extension. Log from first crash from file that was not renamed I lost.

That is a crash in our subtitle renderer. Make sure that your subs are correctly stored and that there no useless plain text files stored next to your movie.

Regarding the update checker. Feel free to disable it. We won't publish any further 0.9 updates after the already released version 0.9.10, which you are welcome to download here. Additionally, the update checker is kind of limited and will only show 1.0.x updates even if we released a 0.9.11.

Thanks for releasing 0.9.10. This is much appreciated by those that still are running Tiger due to other dependencies that prevent from upgrading beyond 10.4.latest

Trac is down for maintenance so I can't view the bugs listed, but dragging and dropping VIDEO_TS folders from .img files I've created or DVDs I've burned on OSX doesn't work. Seems to work if I open them from the file menu however.

I googled and tried searching the forum for this issue but couldn't readily find anything. I have read elsewhere that VLC has problems with disk images or DVDs created/burned on OSX. For some reason I feel that I haven't encountered this until recently, but it's possible that in the past I hadn't really been checking my .img files or playing burned DVDs with VLC very much.

I downloaded VLC 0.9.10 just to see if this would fix the issue, and there wasn't any change.

Any help is appreciated, even if it's just a link to another thread or "this is a known issue with VLC" reply.

sorry of course if my question has been asked a thousand times but I swear I searched the forum first without finding any topic answer !
I have an old powerbookG4titanium processor 400Mhz power PC with RAM 512+ 256 and I run OS 10.4.11 & VLC 0.9.10
The problem is
when i run an xvid file i have the sound and no picture.
I have tried deleting all the preferences without success.
If you can help...that will be so kind !

Every time when download vlc hire then 8.6 every time there is no video, but only sound with black screen. I wrote, other too, here, about that , no change again with vlc-0.9.10.dmg , and no even answer. Why You need ...bug reports wanted!!

I'm unable to respond to every thread daily. I've got a life outside the VLC world. Additionally, I'm lacking my pay check for... hmm, the last 6 years?

@haradomadaire: your computer is likely not Quartz Extreme compatible and therefore VLC is unable to produce any kind of video output. Please get VLC 0.8.6i, which includes an older video output module still supporting your Mac.

@ghoster: As you could see by the date of the initial posting to this thread and its contents, you'll notice that it was created before VLC 0.9.10 was released and therefore meant to collect bugs specifically to fix in this very release, as it is the last version of VLC for 10.4.x ever. I strongly recommend you to delete your preferences and cache completely by deleting both a folder called "VLC" and a file named "org.videolan.vlc.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences. This way, you should be able to get video in any case with VLC 0.8.6i and possibly even with 0.9.10. If not, give details about your Mac.

@jcaples: without excerpts of the debug log (Window -> Messages) or error messages displayed by VLC, it's hard to say what's actually wrong there. The audio codec which wasn't included in early releases of VLC, what prevented playback of DVDs that had been burnt with iDVD, is included nowadays. DVDs not burnt and created with iDVD were never affected.

Quartz Extreme is part of the rendering mechanism used by Mac OS X and strongly relies on a OpenGL-capable graphics card. Thus, it is a fast way to display rapidly changing 2D graphics easily on a Mac. Prior releases of VLC include another video output module, which did not rely on that mechanism. Since QE was introduced by Mac OS X 10.2 and more or less all Macs with a modern G4 processor (733 MHz plus) include a capable graphics card, the prior module was removed from VLC as it lead to many crashes on modern Macs.

VLC 0.9.10 is dropping frames and freezing video on all files intermittently, the audio continues as normal. It did this in the previous version also. I would love to get this working again as it is/was the best video app available.

I tried both the preferences and the cache without any luck so I have downgraded to version 0.9.8a - I'll see how i get on with that.
Meanwhile, if anyone has a solution...

update; 0.9.8a still skips, going to try an earlier version...
