VLC ran fine then all of a sudden...no sound, from either the internal Mac speakers or the USB digital out.

I removed and downloaded a new one and still no sound?

Is only VLC affected? Does a reboot help?

No reboot does not help....I rebooted several times.

1)Checked the audio properties on the Mac.
2)Tested iTunes to make sure I could get sound.
3)Copied the app to my applications folder....no sound.
4)Copied everything in the .zip to my applications folder including the desktop image of the program....no sound.
5)Tested a .wav file...no sound
6)Tested a .flac file...no sound
7)Tested a internet radio station...no sound

Note: Although I do not get sound, the application (VLC) behaves in a normal way ie it IS playing the music.....as the time bar moves across in normal fashion

Does clearing VLC's preferences help?

Greetings! I am running VLC on an Intel iMac 2.6 GHz processor, Leopare 10.5.7. VLC hasn't had sound for me for several months. I recently downloaded and tried 1.0, no luck. I resorted to running version 0.86i, which has fine sound. Today I found this thread, determined to solve the problem. I went to the preferences folder (in ~/Library/Preferences) and deleted the contents, reasoning that VLC must recreate this, since installation involves only dragging it into the app folder. After that VLC 1.0 works with sound. No ill effects as far as I can tell.

Good luck!

I had same problem, solved it by starting VLC going to preferences/audio and checking the enable audio box.

Having trouble getting sound out from my optical port - at least my home theater receiver is not recognizing the output any more... Hmm...
