Retain 400% Volume Outside VLC

Greetings, folks!
I am loving VLC 0.9.9a! A challenge for me is that I have become (very!) spoiled by the 400% volume preference and want to retain it in other apps as well. I have to trust that it must be possible to change the default system volume setting to match it, even if on a per-application basis and I have never experienced any audio distortion at the 400% setting, thus it must be both possible and reasonable, and I am perfectly capable of turning it down as needed. What Terminal command or .plist setting (as two possible examples) do I need to change?
Thanks!!

This is an internal VLC feature which cannot be transfered to other applications. You can only set the system volume to 100 % or use VLC to play your files with our volume amplifier.

The only other solution is to attach you computer to an external amplifier.
