Delete:
~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.plist
~/Library/Preferences/VLC
or, use the apple-script, which is inside a folder of the vlc-diskimage:
Goodies/Delete VLC Preferences

Hi - I have the same problem. I have deleted preferences using the tool provided twice now, and tried different disks. Still no luck. I am a new user and have read through and applied instructions from the 'play' sections of the documentation also, but I still cannot get it to work. Maybe doing something very basic wrong, but can't figure out what that is. Any steer appreciated, thanks.
System info: Macbook Pro 15" (new) with Leopard 10.5.6

Which version did you try ?
For me using a ppc too with 10.5, vlc 0.86c or 0.86i works best.
Maybe, try out one of these variants ?

I downloaded v0.9.9 released 4 April 2009. Should I try an older version? If so, are these easily accessible?
Scrap that - found it! Will try and do that tomorrow - thanks.
