System freeze when using VLC

I'm experiencing random total system freezes when using VLC 0.9.8 (and also the 1.0.0 beta).
The freezes only happen when using VLC.
I can't find anything in the logs in Console so I can't give you more info.

It manifests itself when playing a movie fullscreen on a second screen (TV).
Suddenly the image stops, as does the systems' clock in the menu bar.
Audio, however, keeps running. (never tested for how long, but a significant time)
Only solution is to manually restart the Mac.
No system or VLC notifications appear.

This is a driver or a Quicktime problem.

using an imac by any chance? if so, the imac's gpu is overheating and causing your system to freeze or shutdown. use something like istat pro to monitor the temp of the gpu diode. get a can of compressed air and blow out the dust in the circular intake vent on the rear of the unit. then install a fan control app like "imac fan control" and adjust the cpu fan slightly up (a couple hundred rpm increse should be sufficient). the gpu temp may drop by 10F and you'll no longer experience system freezes.
