Still having freezing problems playing over LAN

I'm playing videos over a 802.11n wireless LAN. I have lots of problems where when I play videos this way, I get frequent freezes. There are some buffering settings, but they don't help much, and they also introduce a long delay for pause to take effect. This issue has been brought up before, but it seems to not have been resolved. Any news on this? Is there any way I can trick VLC into thinking that all file plays are downloads and it should start buffering the whole thing?
