7.1 audio... wavs and m2ts

Postby pittedbull » 04 Feb 2009 17:13

Hi Guys,

Im using VLC to help test an audio device capable of 7.1 audio and am having a few problems.

Firstly I downloaded the 7.1 test wav from microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... audio.aspx)
this gave me some issues when played in VLC (although played in 7.1 fine from Wave Editor) the channels were all jumbled up. I put this down to the fact that this wav file
has the channels configured as center left/right rather than side left right (for 7.1 surround/rear-surround). I therefore created my own 7.1. test wav file with the channels labeled correctly (i believe) as SL and SR. Again this plays perfectly in Wave Editor, in VLC i get the channels in the correct positions now (i.e. the 5.1 channels) , but the side channels are ignored.

Can anyone help me?

Also, does VLC support 8 channel audio in m2ts?

Many thanks!

You really need to test VLC 1.0.0-dev to check those issues.

VLC's support for 7.1 is extremely limited, especially on OS X. Lack of hardware and samples is the simplest reason for this. Lack of importance the 2nd :(

I have fixed 7.1 support in 9.8 and 1.0 (for osx).
I have hardware device in development at the moment (USB 2.0 7.1 sound card) ;-), and wanted to used VLC to do a demonstration of the device working. It works well now.

I really should submit a patch...
