stuttering/freezing on avis

I'm running 0.9.6 and it seems to hang a lot, especially on longer files. On all files it will clip a bit every couple minutes, but on longer files the frame just freezes and then the video eventually catches up while the audio plays through. I have a macbook pro 2.5 ghz with 4 gigs ram + leopard 10.5.6 so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. It's basically done this ever since I've got my mac and installed the program and on any file (mostly xvids). Wondering if there's anything I can do to make these files play smooth!

0.86 should handle those better.

are the older versions known to work better with xvid?

i'm having the same issue with the 9.8 version of VLC
i went back to the older version of VLC 8.6 and it works ALOT better stutters just in the beginning (kinda like buffering) then movie playback is smooth there on after (for both HD content and reg divx/xvid content)
Hopefully Videolan get's the problem fixed in the next release because i really don't feel comfortable using an older version that is not patched and has vulnerability and bugs
but for now it will have to do as quicktime for me is not an option at this point

Hey Guys, I've had problems with stuttering for a while since I moved to Vista. I had fixed it by using version of 0.9.1 (and using Win32 and OpenGL output modules) but I accidentally updated and can't find the version I had used. Doing that fixed the stuttering but it did cause the audio and video to move out of sync progressively. Is there a specific version of 0.8.6 or any other that might help me? Much appreciated.

all i did was download the 8.6 off the main page and default installed on my macbook
and it fixed the issue
no settings to change or anything
worked like a charm
there was something majorly changed in the new version but i'm not quite sure what it was but it didn't turn out good for mac users

Once again i am using one of the new macbooks (aluminum unibody ) 4gb DDR3 RAM, 2.0 ghz core2duo, Nvidia 9400m video card and a 500 GB Seagate Momentus Internal HD drive (replaced the stock Fujitsu 150 gb HD)

I installed a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6 and now VLC skips on typical 1.4GB (vs. 700MB) avi files... playback is fine on the slimmer 700 MB files.
Quicktime and Mplayer plays them both back fine on my new external drive...
Any thoughts?
PS Newegg poster also had this issue with this drive on his Macbook Pro...
I am running .9.9a on 10.5.7 and have never had this problem before (on previous drives)... Is this a VLC issue or a hard drive issue?
I am leaning towards VLC issue, BUT, video playsback fine on external drive??? WTF???... It could be two problems???

Seems to be a problem with the Seagate Momentus 5400.6 drive. I have this issue both via Flash video as well as in VLC. It came about after I upgraded from the OEM drive to the Momentus 5400.6. *VERY* frustrating, as the other 500GB drive that was on the market at the time was just too loud (the WD Scorpio) in my MacBook Unibody.
If listening closely, you can hear the Momentus perform a read/write in unison with the stutters.
