Trying to play DVD in VLC.

I am trying to playa new DVD in VLC. I have managed to set this as my default DVD player now. However, when I try and play a DVD Region 1 it makes noise (the DVD rotates in the drive) but it does not load. What is happening?
How can I redeem this... My Macbook is set on to English setting and when not in VLC the macbook requests a regional change, but I know this can be overcome by VLC. It's just not working yet.

Help me please.

I am having a similar problem, everyone says that VLC plays DVD's without region constraints and until my recent move to Mac I never had any problems with such things because my PC's DVD drives had no Region problems.
With my MacBook I turn off all CD/DVD's from trying to open any programs when inserted so I don't get offered to change my Region setting, Drag the DVD into VLC and yes I do get video but not watchable video...

What is going wrong with VLC, am I perhaps missing some important Codec?
I have the most recent release of VLC.

HELP PLEASE!

The problem is not really on the VLC side, but rather on Apple's side. For Mac DVD drives, it feels like they specifically chose brands whose makers have gone above and beyond the call of duty regarding region coding: VLC is often unable to overcome their particular locking.
However, depending on the exact model of your drive, you might be able to flash the firmware with a so-called RPC1 version. See http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php for more details.
