OS X 10.5.6 Compatibility

Postby selowitch » 20 Dec 2008 17:06

I am experiencing kernel panics when playing back videos with VLC 0.9.8a. This only began happening since I upgraded to OS X 10.5.6 and had never happened prior to that. Could there be a compatibility problem?

VLC doesn't have enough privileges to directly cause a system crash. The 10.5.6 update contained updated video drivers and OpenGL libraries - probably one of those is doing something bad. I'd suggest getting the combo updater for 10.5.6 from the Apple software download site and applying that.

If that doesn't fix it, I'd take this to a Mac troubleshooting forum such as the one at http://forums.macosxhints.com/ .

... Additionally, make sure to reset VLC's preferences and cache. These tend to break on System Upgrades from time to time.

Hi all,
I received a recommendation to use VLC to get around Region locking on my MAC for viewing DVDs - I hope I haven't seriously misunderstood :-|

Anyway, downloaded 0.9.8a and my MAC is running 10.5.6 (Power PC). My DVD player is locked to Region 2 and I can read Region 2 discs using VLC, but I tried two known good Region 1 discs and VLC seems to do something for 5 seconds or so as you see the blue/white "doing_something" scroll bar moving and you can hear the DVD drive being accessed - then nothing, VLC just goes back to where it was :(

I hope I haven't made some seriously goofy mistake and that this feedback can help for the future - I'd sure like to get around my region code lock without having to Flash.

Thanks for your time
PaulR

Regrettably, VLC can only work-around the region code protection on drives with a so-called RPC1 firmware. Currently used RPC2 firmwares don't allow this anymore...
