audio stutters, video fine

my VLC can't play any xvid files without stuttering audio. video seems to play fine, audio stutters every 2 seconds or so. i've tried version 0.8.6c, 0.8.6e, 0.8.6h, and the newest 0.9.6 all have the same result. i cleared the VLC preferences and rebooted after trying each and deleting. i got Quicktime to play the xvids fine now, both xvid and HD mov files.
i've been researching and trying lots of things, and nothing works. i like VLC and always use it on windows, so it would be nice to get the MAC working.
stutters with both VBR and CBR audio streams.

I am getting this same problem. Only seems to be on some content and only when I transcode to file. I am taking AVI and converting them to mp4 of tv programs for my kids ipod. the video is fine, but the audio on the mp4 is choppy. If I open it up in VLC it appears and soudns just fine. So something maybe wrong with the file or playbac, but sure which

no filters at all enabled. haven't adjusted anything since installing (with exception of those output settings, which are once again set back to default)
unlike the above poster, it happens to all my files, not just those i tried to convert

This is definitely a bug in VLC 0.9.6.
I can no longer stream AAC+ audio. In previous versions of VLC, no problem. Any Internet radio audio stream in AAC craps out. I will downgrade to an older version of VLC until this bug is fixed.

I have the same problem, though not every 2 seconds, more like every few minutes. I've only tried the later version (0.9.4 and up) on Mac OSX 10.4, never got around to using the 0.8.x series. It's more or less all Xvid files for me too (can't say 100%, because I've not done that much testing) but all of them plays fine in MPlayer (OSX version).
I would very much like to change completely to VLC, the video looks much better (and it handles HD) but the audio problem stops me.

I have been having the same problem ever since using 0.9.x. On 0.8.6 there was no stutter, and clearing all vlc preferences helps... for a short time.
I also have the impression that the problem get worse the more I fast forward. So when I clear vlc preferences all is normally good for a week, but fast forwarding through a single file is enough to mess things up.
Console output shows nothing, and all settings are default.
My system is osx 10.5 (latest) on a macbook 2.0 GHz processor with 2 Gig memory. System monitors show no excessive system load (maybe 10 % cpu).
Just my 2 cents.
