colours of snapshots are distorted

Hi,
I wanted to use the VLC-Player to create snapshots of some DVDs, but I noticed that the brightness was slightly different. A black border (RGB value 0 0 0) becomes a nearly black border (RGB value 16 16 16). At the same time, perfectly white pixels (255 255 255) become something like 235 235 235
This affects both PNG and JPEG snapshots. I have MacOS 10.5.5, VLC 0.9.5 (I am trying to compile a newer version at the moment).
Is anyone able to reproduce this?
