FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE PLAYING 1080p......

Hello fellow HD fans....

As you know VLC is still currently not supporting dual processing as well as not being able to correctly play back 1080p material.

I have a Power Mac G5 Tower with 8 gigs of ram, a WD Velociraptor 10,000 rpm system HD 300 gig, and a 1TB WD Green Caviar 7200 HD.

My system is totally optimized to play HD files on an uncompressed level of that of 1080p DVC PRO HD from my Panasonic AJDSDX-2000 P2 ENG Camera. I have no problem playing HD through Final Cut Pro HD 6.0 uncompressed. Sadly....I have trouble playing 1080p through VLC!

So.......Until VLC figures out the rest, I have a solution for all you Mac users like myself.

Quicktime has ever been the foundation of video playback for Mac...and still is!

If you take the .mkv files for 1080p and right click over the .mkv file as is or after you use RAR EXPANDER, open the file in Quicktime. You will notice the playhead streaming and buffering. When it has completely buffered out, it will play smooth as silk without error or lagging and in full 1080p.

Now you are asking what about the audio? Download Perian which contains all the proper video/audio codecs, which especially works for decoding DTS, DTS-ES, DTS HD, DOLBY TRU HD, DOLBY 5.1, etc. If you run an optical cable from the G5 tower to your Surround amp, it will play through the encoded audio tracks as well.

Here is another recommendation for audio:

The best way to ensure proper playback of surround sound audio is the proper management of discreet channels and to have a discreet audio card installed into your PCI slot. I have an M-AUDIO 7.1 Revolution card, which sadly they don't make anymore, which I am sure they have a new model or make of.

Heres what you do:

1. Install the card into the PCI slot in the tower, install the software.
2. You will need 4-5 stereo mini to L/R RCA male cables.
3. Follow the directions and diagrams for input/output connections from the card to your surround amp
4. Connect an optical from the G5 tower to the amp or use the coaxial out from the card to the coaxial in on your amp.

And...WALAHHHH! All audio will be decoded discreetly to your amp with out error.

As far as video is concerned you will need to spend some money to ensure the best quality.

A company called Black Magic Designs makes, to my knowledge, and by recommendation by one of my friends who is one of the top broadcast engineers in the metro area. Any PCI card they make that outputs RGB or HDMI to your HD projector or HDTV and will do the job and do it A+. Their cards are on the pricey side, but I use them for both broadcast HD post production and entertainment and they are flawless.

If you are an avid HD watcher like myself, this will open up a world of wonders to Mac users until the others catch up.

Work's well with VLC 0.9.5 now.
Otherwise 0.8.6i is the best choice.
