You should give a look at this http://code.google.com/p/movist/

It is less hungry than vlc, stable and use a more Mac behavior and interface, plus you have the choice of the codec you want to use : QuickTime or the built-in ffmepeg for any kind of media.

plus, at least it is able to play correctly MP4 h264 files with multiple audio tracks and subtitles.

and there are video/audio settings with a nice interface available on the fly unlike vlc.

So this were the vlc improvements will have to be.
