0.9.3 Black Screen

OK, I just got an "upgrade notice" from 0.9.2, so I let it automagically upgrade.

Now, however, when running 0.9.3 with ANY video format, the video is all BLACK.

Suggestions?

I am fixing to roll back to 0.9.2.

Delete preferences and cache files.

No Joy...

Deleting contents of ~Library/Preferences/VLC/ and re-installing 0.9.3 has no effect.

On rollback to 0.9.2 the video works fine.

Again deleted VLC and all preferences and cache and re-installed 0.9.3 resulted in black video window. No video at all. This is Mac PowerPC running OSX 10.4.11

It might be that your computer is to old to render OpenGL video and unfortunately, we don't support the old Quartz rendering anymore.

Yeash, is it soooo difficult to find the "Older versions" heading that is present on EACH VLC download page ?

400MHzpower PC G3 192 MB SDRAM
BTW. you run 10.4.9 on that ? That's insane.....
(And yes, these configurations are no longer supported. Apple makes it too difficult for applications such as ours to support old hardware.)

Try deleting preferences and cache files again if you currently have 0.9.2, as you said that was working beforehand. Otherwise try the latest 0.8.x version (0.8.6i):

I also began having the black screen problem, stuttering problems, etc., once I moved into the 0.9 version range. I discovered that I could sometimes correct the black screen problem by choosing "Normal Size" under the Video menu, but this didn't solve the other problems, such as stuttering, dropping frames, etc. After trying a few of the newer 0.9 versions, I realized that I had to go back to 0.8.6i in order to restore everything to normal. On the other hand, my daughter's machine can run 0.9.3 fine.

The difference?

While both of our machines are early-model, eight-year-old G4's, System Profiler reveals that she has Core Graphics and Quartz Extreme support, while my G4 500 Mhz DP has neither. All I've got is a ATY, Rage128Pro chipset and 16 MB of VRAM, while she has a GeForce2 MX chipset and 32 MB of VRAM. I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 just fine, while she is really pushing it with Leopard 10.5.5. :)

So for the rest of you having this black screen problem, as others have stated, you probably just need to go back to a version of VLC that is more compatible with your machine.

In 0.9.3 we removed pure Quartz rendering (because it crashed quite often in 10.4 and 10.5) As a side affect, machines without Quartz Extreme are no longer supported. I added a note about this to the 0.9.4 release.
