VLC player will not play dvds

hey guys my vlc player is not playing dvds, i downloaded it because my normal dvd player application wouldnt let me change the drive region code.( in VLC) i click on file ,open disk,dvd and it selects it and the view window comes up but then it quits without playing the movie. if some one could help me out it would be much appreciated as i dont have a tv and really want to start watching movies again

Hi,

It sounds like you're trying to play a movie from a region different to that which your DVD drive is set to. Modern Macs have region encoding at the hardware level; using VLC will not necessarily let you play out of region DVDs.

There are a few options that might work-

- Try opening the disc as a Video TS folder rather than a disc.
- Open the disc without using the DVD menu. You can change the way libdvdcss attempts to decrypt the DVD in advanced properties, try a few of the settings and see if it makes any difference.
- Reflash your disc drive's firmware (risky and difficult, especially with newer Macs, not really recommended)

Of course, the best option if you have the cash is to buy an external DVD drive that you can set to the region you need.
