VLC quits after 10 seconds

Postby BassJunkie » 11 Sep 2008 13:04

I'm using MAC OS X PowerPC 10.3.9 and downloaded the vlc-0.8.6i player. The files play for aprox 15 seconds with a black screen and just the audio and then it crashes. How can i fix this?

I am in the same case with PowerBook G4 - 1.67 GHz - Mac OS X - 10.4.11 and VLC 0.8.6i Janus PPC
VLC stops after a few seconds and stays frozen.
What is this problem ?
Thank you to answer.

i've tried them all, and the only ones that work are the two oldest versions (vlc-0.8.4a & vlc-0.7.0) but when i try to open VLC 0.8.6i it crashes with a blank screen and just the audio, i know VLC 0.8.6i works on my mac as it worked before i used the Mac re-install disc to clean the hard drive.

I checked the console crash log and the only thing i could find strange was:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x06a820ac

I hope this helps someone figure out a solution

Your preferences are likely broken. Use the Delete prefs. script from the Goodies folder on the 0.9.2 dmg.
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Has anyone found a solution for this? Because I am having the same problem, also with 0.8.6i on 10.3.9. (And deleting the prefs didn't help.)

Is there an older version that does not have this trouble?

Same problem with me, same OS. I have tried to re-install my Quicktime back to the 7.4 or older for Panther, and of course Apple doesn't list anything for Panther anymore. The link they now post takes me to 7.5 for Tiger or Leopard. My VLC worked great until Apple upgraded my QT Pro (twice now) and a few of my other programs no longer work as well. I am a real dweeb when it comes to fixing stuff on my computer. I tried deleting my VLC and any other file associated with it that I could find, and reinstalled it, but to no avail. I use VLC for much of my work here and I have been dead in the water on much of it. The truth here, is this really something that is the fault of the new upgraded QT pro I have or is it the fault of the VLC or am I doing something wrong when I install the new software? I have installed both the newest VLC, then deleted and installed the old version. Nothing, just crash reports.

Yes, what the above poster said about version 8.6c works. It'll have to do for now.

So what was the deal anyway? Essentially the symptoms were that when I would open any avi/divx file it would open for about 3 seconds and then crash and generate an error report. I'm using a PowerPC G3 iBook (900Mhz). I pretty much only use this as a netbook of sorts, so without the ability to play video was irking me.

Eh!?
