Increase buffering for video play over LAN?

I have a file server that has my videos on it, and I'm using SMB to mount the file system on my Mac. When I play videos with VLC, I find that there is a fair amount of stuttering in the video and audio. I suspect that while the wireless LAN is fast enough on average, there may be interference that results in increased latency at times. I've looked through the preferences and I can't find an appropriate option. Is there a way to increase the amount of buffering in memory so I don't get these skips and stutters?

Thanks!

I also suffer from this problem. I can copy entire video file from my sever to macbook over wifi in 2-3minutes, yet it will not play back with out stuttering every few minutes. I would like to know if there is away to increase buffer length, 30-60 seconds should manage to get my videos to play back smoothly.

Thanks
Morgy

open it, search for caching... there should be many, pick the one you need... i used this one:

[access_file] # File input
# integer (Caching value in ms)
file-caching=5000

there is one problem with it, it takes about 5sec before the video starts, and it cuts it 5sec short...

The bookmark 245368 does not appear to exist on that page and when searching that page cache or caching never appear.
Did you post the correct base url?

yeah, why did the url change over night...? Its under point 1.3

Its sad that VLC has so many options but you cant change them in the GUI... I think this one is a very useful one

Actually it is in the GUI. In the settings, enable All settings shown, then go to

Input/Codecs > Access modules > File > Caching value in ms

Only problem is, in the latest version this setting seems to have been disregarded, so I had to go back to 8.2 in order to use my network to play vids.
