MRL on Mac OS X

I've used VLC in Windows before and I'm confused with a difference that I see in Mac OS X that I can't understand.
In Windows I do:
File
Open File
Streaming/Saving->Settings
And there I can put my own MRL.
In Mac there's no MRL to be seen there and the only way I can see any kind of MRL is in the very end of the Streaming/Exporting Wizard and... I can't even change it!
Why?
Why is Window's version superior to Mac's version?
Is there something that makes it impossible to edit by hand the MRL on the VLC on Mac?
Is it only possible to do the MRL by hand on the Terminal?
