Help us! Looking for HD material that stutter in VLC

Hello,

We are looking for materials (samples), in H264 that don't play correctly on VLC because CPU usage is high on MAC OS X.

Thanks

The Planet Earth 1080P encodes stutter like crazy on my 2.6 quad mac pro, (8g ram & 8800GT). Sorry no sample since its all copyright stuff but here is the video stream specs anyway incase they help. They are probably the most demanding encodes I have and give me the worst playback.

Codec: x264
Bitrate: ~11-12 Mbit/s (peaks at ~40Mbit)
Resolution: 1920x1080
Framerate: 23.976fps
Container: .MKV

About 1/2 my 1080P collection stutters, others crash at random times. CoreAVC along with MPC give me flawless playback in vista x86. That multi-threaded decoder should sort it all out. Thanks for taking a look at this, been waiting for it.

Same here using 2.2 GHz MBP. It works a hell of a lot better than quicktime though..
Quicktime plays it without stutter, but obviously dropping frames. VLC plays it fluently for a while and then pauses for a few seconds and continues, pauses, continues etc.

What is the best? Droping frames or pause/play/pause ?

Hmmm, well.. When dropping frames, at least you see the whole video.. VLC pauses for around 5-8 seconds: that's 8 seconds of video you won't be seeing.. But still, the best would be no dropping/pausing at all ;)

If I'm not mistaken, isn't multithreading a project during Google SOC? That should help, right?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this but the video in this torrent for Cloverfield stutters a lot to the point that it's unwatchable:

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4212686/Clo ... .x264-1920

It's a 1080p MKV. It has a sample video file so you can just download that.

Just out of interest: as far as i know this is a problem with the ffmpeg h264 decoder that simply isn't performing very well at high bitrates - mplayer has the same problems. I am not sure what the VLC team is able to do about it unless you start to tweak the ffmpeg decoder code or integrate another better performing decoder (which doesn't really exist for OSX as far as i know - at least with an open source license).

I know a place with some HD material, but it needs an invitation to get in (I have several). It's a Spanish site (from Spain, not latin-america) hosted in the Netherlands that only does HD material. Even if it's Spanish, most of the HD videos have the original audio too.
Most videos play ok, but there's one that had me bugged because it didn't play OK at all, even disabling the FFmpeg filter. CPU was high all the time (and it's a brand new MacBook Pro).
The movie is "Open season" (16.13 GB). Video codec: VC-1

The 720p MKV version of Earth (referenced above) stutters too. Not pausing, but there is no smooth playback except for low intensity scenes. Like its just barley 24 fps or something..

Is there a temporary solution? (increase ram? etc)

Temp solution is use Plex, till they get it sorted atleast. Had high hopes for 0.9.2 but no. That decoder can't be added to VLC? XBMC is open source.

Eclipse's 720p releases of Code Geass R2 stutter like crazy in VLC on Mac OS X even though MPlayer OSX and Quicktime (with Perian) both play them fine. This is on a 17" MacBook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo (Penryn) and 2GB of RAM.

Any properly encoded x264 720p or higher res will drop frames in new 0.9.2. It never used to be able to play 1080p unless you turned the settings down and even then....but now it won't play even 720p!

720p h.264 mp4s are fine in new vlc though (they were fine before as well)

At least it plays ASS subs now!
Great work on that!

This 720p trailer plays fine on an 1.9 GHz iMac G5 in MPlayer (installed via MacPorts), but I cannot get it to play smoothly in VLC 0.9.2:

It works ok here (I have skip filter in all h.264 activated, maybe that's helping) but it does consume a fair amount of CPU though (55%-60% in a new MBP):

All of my HD .mkv content plays perfectly up to a random time, and then quits playing. No error message, no crash message. It just closes the player window. The files range from 2.5 gigs to almost 3.5 gigs. Same effect regardless of size. All of them are roughly 2 hour HD movies in 720p.

Also I can't seem to find any software (VLC fails to do it) to convert away from the .mkv file. For some reason all my .mkv files make all of my video players and video conversion software fail.

Rosario Vampire also is glitchy in VLC. Artifacts in the beginning and dropping frames in general. Fine in Mplayer. On a Mac Mini core2Duo 2.0Ghz

In general I am having issues with most MKV's. I hate to go back to MPlayer with the nice fonts finally in VLC.
