MKV

Postby normanu » 06 Jun 2008 20:15

I was wondering how come VLC can't play mkv's fluently, but when I play the file in osxmbc, its fluent and I got more then enough cpu to spare...
Is it possible as that project is also opensource to use their ffmpeg decoder for VLC ?

i found it the same way for PPC Macs, VLC is bad for playing back anything in a .mkv (even a low quality divx movie in one is unwatchable). but when i use MPlayer OS X or Niceplayer i can play most of my movies in a .mkv format.

i dont know whats up with VLC and .mkv containers. it seems to handle them all wrong (there is also a few other codecs that do the same but play fine in another player). like you said if osxmbc (or MPlayer or Niceplayer) can play a .mkv just fine then something is up with VLC that can be fixed.

Agreed. Mplayer (when I can make it work -- ugh) does do a better job than VLC with MKVs, but VLC is more stable than Mplayer, at least for me. I'm on a dual 800 PPC G4.

Well mplayer does a little bit of a better job, but its still nothing compared to how osxmbc plays HD especially noticeable with the 1080p ones.
My system is a Intel c2d 2.33mhz

Nightly builds should be more stable on MKV.
About HD playback, we are working on it.

I actually didn't have any stability problems, just really slow decoding.
Allot of messages as below.

ffmpeg: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)
