i figured out how to turn it into an mp4 but now how do i put it on my ipod

Hi,
The iPod has quite specific requirements for video, so I wouldn't try to encode the video in VLC. I would recommend you download ffmpegX (a shareware video converter), which has a preset setting to convert to iPod video. Then just load it into iTunes and sync it with your iPod.
