.mkv Error message + others...?

Hi everybody - I'm new here...

I'm running VLC 0.8.6d on a MacBook Pro 2.33Ghz / 2Gib Ram / OSX 10.5.2 Leopard

I don't know why but I tend to get a lot of error messages with VLC - an example of which is one I ALWAYS get from .mkv files:

"auhal: You should configure your speaker layout with Audio Midi Setup Utility in /Applications/Utilities. Now using Stereo mode."

I have an Apogee Ensemble FireWire400 interface because I do audio production. Audio is outputting to my stereo speakers perfectly fine - so why the error message? can I prevent it?

Any Ideas would be appreciated thanks!

Leo

Just to confirm,

I've now upgraded to 0.8.6.f and still get the same error.

Thanks

I can confirm the exact same issue with two other audio interfaces connected to a Mac Pro:

- AudioKontrol 1 (USB Based)
- TC Near 24D (Firewire based)

The speaker setup is correctly configured in the Audio/Midi utility, but VLC somehow doesn't see this. For the most part this isn't an issue since I can just ignore the error message, but I think for some video files with 5.1 sound and the like the audio level is computed incorrectly because of this. Many movies get much too loud sound levels, so I have to manually drag the volume slider down to avoid audio clipping.

yeah I've got to have the volume slider down permanently to prevent clipping!

I can also add that I have this issue with both .ts and .mkv files, so it's not exclusively for .mkvs. :)

have you tried MPlayer OS X and Niceplayer to see if you get the same issues ?

I've tried both, and get no error messages. I think the clipping issue sometimes occur in MPlayer OSX as well though. So it might not detect everything correctly behind the scenes.
