VLC & Quicktime not working well together

Hello,I updated my Quicktime (7.4) a few weeks ago and ever since my avi and mov files do not play properly through VLC. I get audio most of the time but no video. I downloaded the newest VLC for OS X (0.8.6e) and I have the same problem. The error I get after about 5 seconds is "macosx: QT doesn't support any appropriate chroma" Does anyone know what's causing this or better yet how to remedy the issue? I could play the avi and mov files in Quicktime but they're very choppy. VLC was playing them very well up until now. Any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I could not get the solution there to fix the problem. If there is some small change to the wording of that solution that ends up working for you, please post it--I hate using MPlayer.

I'm running a Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. OS 10.4.11. VLC 0.8.6c. QT 7.4.1. No playback problems. Sorry to hear other people are having problems. Hope this doesn't confuse matters.
