Using VLC as a upnp player - newcomer to VLC!

Hi - I have VLC on my MAC OSX Leopard system. It's great for playing DVDs and CDs. And files form my hard disk.

I want to play music from my network but are not sure how to do this.

I have a LaCie 1tb disk with its media server (uPnP) working but I'm not sure how to connect to it using VLC.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated and sorry for asking what's probably a relatively trivial question!

David.

p.s. I should probably add I have files in an iTunes library on this media server as well as other folders containing FLAC files. And I'm afraid I don't understand how DAAP might be able to help me either ...

There should be a UPnP discovery.

thanks. What do I need to do to enable upnp discovery in VLC?

Other SW can see the files on my media server but not VLC!

There should be a UPnP discovery.
Well, ok, but there isn't in current builds. Do you mean its planned for later releases?

XBMC is a nice alternative but for UPnP player client. It is very easy to navigate but the issue I have so far is it appears to need a Dual core to run video since from what I can find on those forums it can not take advantage of the Video card to off load the CPU which is the reason I am looking for a UPnP.

You might consider Nero 9. I just discovered it has a UPnP player in its ShowTime Module. By chance Frys has it for Free with rebates and a competitive/upgrade I think until 1/26 if you are in the US.

I would like to see VLC implement this but it doesn't sound like it is ready yet. I think Showtime is going to be too bloated for what I want. I would like something I could launch as UPnP player only or a command line that would take me straight to an autodiscover so I could use my HTPC that is only a 1.6Ghz single core as a UPnP Device. I am currently using Playon for Netflix and Hulu but using XBMC as the UPnP drives the CPU to 100% and causes the stream to be stuttered.
