Problems with converting anything to Theora

I'm using VLC 0.8.6d on a PPC Mac runing Leopard. Every time I attempt to convert a video of any format (I've tried MOV, MP4, and FLV) to Theora video with Vorbis audio, the mulitcolored pinwheel appears and VLC crashes a few seconds later. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? I need to convert video to Theora since it is the only format that is acceptable on Wikipedia.

I've used to have the same problem both under Windows and Debian. In both cases the success rate was something like 50%. The easiest solution was to use ffmpeg2theora http://v2v.cc/~j/ffmpeg2theora/download.html. Works fine and there are plenty of tuning options.

The current version of ffmpeg2theora for Mac OS X (as of April 20), does not process AAC audio.
I notified the developer, who confirmed the issue. We'll have to wait for a recompile...
