Playing HD 1080p content on Mac intel

I have a few questions about what HD content can be played with VLC on Mac Intel?
First of all I got a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Leopard.
Some content 1080p in X264 or H264 codec keeps crashing freezing the picture .(but not all of it : )
Giving me the message 'computer to slow' etc. But come on its one of the fastest laptops at the moment, it should be capable of doing this!
- Is it because of the high bitrate of the files or VLC on Leopard?
- I heard some rumors VLC only uses 1 processor for playback is this true?
I tried to play HD backup from HD DVD and Bluray but sofar I only got picture playing in MPlayer, no Sound and not realtime.
- Is it possible to play this in VLC?
- I read someting about transcoding, how does this work?
Any tips or tricks are more than welcome!
Thanks in advance,
Floris
