Playing HD 1080p content on Mac intel

I have a few questions about what HD content can be played with VLC on Mac Intel?
First of all I got a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Leopard.

Some content 1080p in X264 or H264 codec keeps crashing freezing the picture .(but not all of it : )
Giving me the message 'computer to slow' etc. But come on its one of the fastest laptops at the moment, it should be capable of doing this!
- Is it because of the high bitrate of the files or VLC on Leopard?
- I heard some rumors VLC only uses 1 processor for playback is this true?

I tried to play HD backup from HD DVD and Bluray but sofar I only got picture playing in MPlayer, no Sound and not realtime.
- Is it possible to play this in VLC?
- I read someting about transcoding, how does this work?

Any tips or tricks are more than welcome!

Thanks in advance,

Floris

i think this is a issue with VLC and OS X, i am not sure if VLC for windows or other OS has the same issue or not.

have you tried to play these videos in Quicktime ?

i can play H.264 up to 480p (smoothly) and sometimes even 720p (with a little bit of hiccup) using QT on a 533mhz G4. these videos i used for testing are on Apple trailers.

the same two videos using VLC on my G4 are un-watchable, the video is like a slideshow at best and video locks up wile sound still plays. i think this issue is known

So VLC is not capable of using dual CPUs, will support for dual CPUs be added sometime, cause it would drastically improve performance playing high quality videos.

It has dual core support for sliced HD.

And read the post on how to improve your configuration...

yea i did, that is where i seen in the first post about no dual CPU support, i also did the config as directed it seemed to help a bit but not much in my case cause i am on a G4, looks like i have to stick with QT for H.264 HD playback

When you deactivate the loopfilter (see viewtopic.php?f=12&t=42070&st=0&sk=t&sd ... 45#p136042) the HD-content is playing smoothly.

However, in the current version of VLC (0.8.6d) there is an issue with 1080p content with high bitrate DTS-sound. This issue has been fixed but it required a new built of VLC which is not yet available. Once this new version is released by the dev-team, full HD-content with DTS is playing fine on the Mac using VLC.
