VLC multicast not fully working on Leopard

I've got VLC 0.8.6d installed on an Alum. 24" iMac with Leopard on it. At work, there are approximately 45 channels being broadcast over IP multicast. The channels that are broadcasting on port 1234 work fine on VLC. Channels that are broadcasting on any other port won't tune at all. The error message basically states that it can't find the stream at all. Anyone else run into this problem or know what's going on here?

Did you try with the Mac OS X Firewall off? It is a bit buggy...
Thanks!

Turning off the firewall does not help. Additionally, VLC under Linux (Ubuntu Studio 7.10) seems to have the same problem. All channels on VLC's default port (1234) work fine. Anything being broadcast on any other port simply doesn't work. To make things weirder, the very same channels that don't work in Mac and Linux work fine using VLC under Windows and using an Amino STB. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

This is still an issue.
Edit : more specifically, ports 1-1023 are broken. VLC on Mac and Linux simply won't tune these stations. Port 1024 and above work like a charm on all platforms. Knowing that, is there any advice that can be given?

Not 100% sure how this works in OS X but normally on un*x port 0-1023 are privileged ports. You'll need admin (root) permission to use those ports for incoming traffic.
