Dear All, Thanks so much for your help, in advance! I have installed VLC on my mac, and can play DAT and other files from my hard-drive with VLC. However, I cannot figure out how use VLC to open and play DVDs. I go to both "open disk" and "open file", and select "DVD", and then click "ok", but nothing happens. What to do? Thanks again for any help! - Eric

I've been having the same problem. I've been using VLC in my Mac for a while, for video files from my hard drive and dvds from other regions than the US (I study in Italy). I installed the latest version 8.6.c or whatever on my MacBook which was purchased Jan '07, therefore fairly new, and I haven't been able to watch DVDs from region 2. This is the first time I have this problem, and would appreciate any help given. Thanks.

I have a Mac OSX Tiger and have the same problem. I have followed the instructions as best I can and when I try to open and play my DVD-R I get a message that
reads "no suitable access module". I do not have any idea what that means. If someone who knows what is going on would please answer these questions it would
be greatly appreciated. :| :D

I am having the same problem. I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.8 I bought in the US. I have since moved to Mexico, and DVD Player will not play legal DVDs bought here. Unfortunately, neither will VLC. Any ideas?

Thanks

And so I too join the list of those who can not get this to work.
I keep getting a message: no suitable access module for 'cdda:no suitable audio files' `main: dvdread:///dev/rdisk1@1:1-' when I select play disk
I have tried to play a segment of the actual disk (region 2) and I get a 'access-file: read failed (Permission Denied) error message
I downloaded this puppy as I am traveling globally with my MAC and have lots of various region DVD's.
I'm on a MAC OS X Verison 10.4.11 with a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
My VLC is version 0.8.6d Janus (Intel)
Any help folks? Thanks

Folks, please search the forum before asking questions. This was answered millions of times before. NO, there is NO way to play DVDs from a different region than your drive is set to in case that your Mac is less than 3 years old. This is no bug in VLC and cannot be solved by us. It's due a different firmware implementation, which prevents the region code circumvention.

Edit:
Hint: Search for RPC1 vs RPC2..

Thank you for that - I did search the forum with each of the error messages and received no response.

And as written a couple of times in the past ( viewtopic.php?t=39930 ), YES, there is a way to play DVDs from arbitrary regions on a recent Mac. It's a bit technical, it will void your warranty and some discs still refuse to work, but it exists. Unfortunately, the main reference site for that question is down at the moment.
