At least for VLC, it isn't necessary as the current release 0.8.6c includes native support for the Apple Remote

The Apple Remote does not work properly in Leopard (Mac OS 10.5). The next release (VLC 0.9.0) will fix this. I'm using a development snapshot now and it's quite nice.

We will do a bugfix release before 0.9.0 called 0.8.6d, which is going to be released tonight or tomorrow morning. It provides full Leopard compatibility.

We had a packaging problem with the Windows port. It's solved now and we are currently pushing the new version across our mirrors. Stay tuned for an announcement within the next 24 hours. You can expect full Leopard compatibility.
