Cant read the files recorded by my Sony HDR-CX6EK with VLC... A grey screen shows and VLC quits a few seconds after that... any ideas??? THANKS!

So, I've found an app called Voltaic that will convert AVCHD MTS files to MOV (Apple Intermediate Codec).
http://mac1080hd.com It's $30 trial-ware.

Alas, VLC will not play this format either (Only Quicktime Player on my machine can).

VLC says this:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `icod'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Ok, this is yet another special Quicktime Codec and we can't read it because we don't have the codec. Sorry.

Yes, NB should do it.

I got the same issue. Quicktime codec for .MTS files. VLC installed on Gutsy Ubuntu.
I wasn't clear on the last response. What is NB? Are there plans to add Quicktime H264 codec to VLC's libraries? Or is conversion to other formats the only option for ilnux users?

VLC nightly builds (0.9.0-test2) decodes those files without too many issues.

This is great! I tried the latest nightly build and the MTS file from my Sony work just fine. They look good too.

It doesn't recognize the file extension yet, but you can drop the files into the open playlist.

MTS files from my Sony HDR-SR7 work with 0.9.0-git. The audio however does not. The audio codec is A52, which is apparently supported, but no luck here on my end. Final Cut Pro plays these files ok. I believe the audio is multichannel, rather than plain stereo. Maybe this is related to my issue?

I appreciate your support of mts files. There are more and more camcorders using this format.

I have been using vlc nightlies from this morning to play some of the videos from my Sony HDR-CX7 HD camcorder.

I notice the following problems:

1) The video doesn't display until about 2 seconds in - so I miss the start of the clip.

2) When there is movement within the frame, the moving object exhibits severe 'frilly edges'. I suspect this is due to a bug or incomplete implementation in the motion compensation code.

After playing with the AVCHD support for a while I've come to see that it's not really ready for prime time yet. Some streams play perfectly, but most will glitch and hang or simply fail at some point.

I hope that someone on the VLC team understands the issue. It seems like they are close.

And just FYI - there really are no other tools for playing AVCHD streams in general, so having VLC support this well would be a huge boon to all of the people who are purchasing HD camcorders.

If I can provide example streams that illustrate the problem please let me know. Thanks.

agreed, i brought a panasonic sd9 from amazon, was in bestsellers so there are a lot of people out there buying this camera

also used nightly build and MTS file does still not play, any ideas?

OS: Windows XP Media Center edition

I create MTS files using my Sony HDR-SR12 and while VLC plays the first second or so very well, playback of the video corrupts completely shortly after start, while audio goes on nicely. FWIW, I record in Sony's "AVC HD 16M (FH)" mode, which the camcorder has as 1920X1080. I then transfer the files via USB cable onto my HDD so there's no speed bottleneck that I know of for playback.

This sounds like the same problem other people in this thread have reported, but it seemed like one of the latest posters achieved success. Any idea how? Was there a particular setting I should try? Barring that, is there a free alternative for viewing MTS files. I quite like VLC so I'd much rather there be a solution.

I've having the exact same problem as you. Video plays briefly/with corruption, but audio plays along fine. I'm using the latest version of VLC (1.0.2 Goldeneye), but it did the same thing in 1.0.1. I'm recording using a Sony HDRCX100B (HD on SD Card - Spec here... http://www.sony.com.au/product/hdr-cx100e) using USB to tranfer to my PC. It's recording in whatever is the default setting

If anyone has any ideas why VLC (and Windows Media Player - no codecs) won't play this type of video, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm able to edit the video without any problems in Adobe Premier Pro CS4.

Ah, fair enough. Thanks for the reply Lotesdelere. Looks like I'll be processing these vids on the desktop then... How do people edit HD video on the road then? Buy a desktop replacement (laptop with >=3GHz processor) or just record in a lower framerate/resolution? Be interested to know, but don't want to take up too much of your time. Thanks again.

I downloaded that file and played on my pc running VLC 1.1.5
clipped played but like you mentioned the Zig Zags.
This is what is know as "Deinterlacing". I turned ON in Preferences
and it worked perfectly but lead in portion of the file is tattered
in that file.
