Audio / video delay and default audio output device

Sorry if this has been discussed before, tried searching the forums but couldn't find the answers.

1. I'm getting some delays in audio and video after playing an .avi file for a couple of minutes. Appears that the audio is before the video. Is there any way to reduce / eliminate this?

2. I'm using an m-audio transit USB to output digital optical audio. Every time I start VLC it defaults to the built-in audio output device and I have to manually select the transit device. Is there a way to set the preferences so that this is selected by default every time VLC starts?

My soft/hardware:
- Latest build VLC
- Latest OS X
- Mac mini G4 1.42 512 ram
- M-audio transit USB
- Files played from external firewire HD.

Thanks a million,

/d

Well, I can tell you how it should work, but I can't get it to work on my machine. I posted that it isn't working 2 months ago and didn't get a response.

Anyway, the way you SHOULD be able to do what you want is to go to Preferences -> Audio -> Output Modules -> auhal and then pick the audio device that you want to be the default. If you hover over the spinner arrows, it says:

"Choose the number corresponding to the
number of an audio
device, as listed in your 'Audio Device' menu.
This device
will then be used by default for audio
playback."

I have a Griffin iMic and under my 'Audio Device' menu, I have

iMic USB Audio System
Built-in Output

The second one is checked. I've tried 0 through 10 and it always defaults to whatever device I have picked for my system to use as its default sound.

There is similar functionality in this program for choosing a default video device, and I read a forum thread where that support was broken, but someone was able to fix it and it now works. I'm wondering if maybe the audio support has the same problem and needs to be fixed.

This is such a great program, but this issue is the only thing that is keeping me from using this as my main movie player on my iMac. If this issue were fixed, I could watch movies on my TV (and listen to them on my stereo) while still being able to use the computer seemlessly.

It is so close, I just wish I could convince someone to look at this issue.
