vlc crashes a few seconds after opening any file. I get the "l'application a quitté inopinément" message. I'm using an intel iMac. The error report is extremely long, but, if necessary, I can post it.

Delete your VLC folder. Read in the FAQ

Excuse me; do you mean delete the preferences file? And where can I find this on the faq?
