I'm looking for the best way to transcode avi to wmv in OSX. i have several files in the avi format but need them converted to wmv so they can be playable through my xbox. Would VLC allow me to do this and if so, how?

i'm been looking for a solution for awhile so i would appreciate any help on this.

thanks!

No, because only closed-source Microsoft tools and commercial releases of Flip4Mac are able to encode WMV content. VLC is unable to do so.

Encoding may be possible with and OLD OLD OLD (I'm talking Puma/Jaguar old) program called MediaPipe in which they used the SDK for WMP8 to create a WMV container. Apparently they are still working on the project but there are no public releases of current versions (although if the program is not broken it should work).

Mind again that this is encoding and IS NOT transcoding (which I assume is for a XB360)

Huh?

But VLC for windows can do this easily! Can you get onto a Windows box? I'm having a similar problems with a load of vids that I have in AVI format, which don't appear to want to play when streamed from my Win XP machine to my Xbox360. So, I'm in the process of trying to batch convert a load of them from AVI format to WMV. It appears that VLC can do this.

I will report back with success/failure info.

Cheers, Jon

Hi,

I wanted to lert you know that whilst VLC is able to convert AVI to WMV, and that it is possible to play this through WMP11, when I try to play the file through my Xbox360 it reports that it is an unsupported format.

I also tried TVersity - same result nothing plays. I'm not sure if this is something weird about the AVIs that I'm trying to transcode? What should I be looking out for?

Cheers, Jon
