Bug: VLC ignores Audio devices after it is launched

i use usb headphones.
and I have speakers that use the audio line-out.
i use VLC 0.8.6, OS X 10.4.8, g5 quad PowerMac,
Sound cards: Burr Brown PCM3052 & Crystal Semiconductor CS84xx
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600

when i plugin my usb headphones, the system usually notices and switches automatically. when i remove them the system reverts to my line-out. the following bug occurs whether or not the system switches the audio output automatically or I switch it manually in the system preferences.

whatever the systems preferences are set to when I launch VLC, VLC uses.
however, if i plug in or unplug my usb headphones while VLC is running, the system switches but VLC keeps on using whatever it was when it launched. to get VLC to switch I have to relaunch it. This can actually mean that audio is coming out my line-out and my usb headphones at the same time!

Using the menu under Audio>audio device; does nothing. The headphones are recognized in this menu.

I've pretty well troubleshot everything i can. switching the system prefs while VLC is running, using the audio device menu, and guessed with s/pdif in the VLC preferences Audio>Output Modules. There is an option under the Audio>Output Modules>auhal that i don't know what to do with, is that related?

i can live with this bug, but if there's a fix, let me know. I was trying to report it to developers but it's nearly impossible to report a bug for this thing.

VLC Losing Audio

I've had a similar problem. I don't know if they're related. When VLC crashes playing a a52 digital audio (5.1 digital audio) stream audio doesn't get reset back and I can't use audio at all until I restart. Unfortunately, VLC crashes more than I'd like in full screen playing 5.1 so this happens relatively often. Anyone else experiencing this or aware of this? It happens on multiple machines of mine (all 10.4.8 OS, 0.8.6a, Intel-based Mac).
