Is there a way to make the DVD disc spin at 1x speed?

The Apple DVD Player spins the DVDs at 1x speed to minimize vibration and power consumption on laptops.

VLC spins the DVD drive at maximum speed even though the disc is only playing at 1x speed.. so the notebook vibrates a lot more with VLC.

Is this something that is fixable at all?

VLC does read disks in a different way, AFAIK, as it breaks the CSS encryption as it goes. This could affect it, but I can't see why it wouldn't be possibly to slow the disk down at least a bit...

Just discovered that very same issue.
I was wondering, as this thread is very old, if any improvement has been made regarding the full spin.
It makes so much noise that I can hardly hear the sound of the dvds. Officially using DVD player again.
Shame, VLC is top free product and has far better features than the Apple stuff.
Merci

DiscRotate might do the trick for you.
"DiscRotate is a Daemon and PreferencePane that will control the speed of your
optical drives. It is written in Cocoa (Obj-C 2.0) for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard."
http://discrotate.sourceforge.net/

Cheers.
